Food insecurity & Homelessness in Atlanta: A Modest Proposal

Some opinions one has about a range of issues makes the holder of those opinions look smart in the eyes of others, and endear him to his compatriots. As a writer I love it when my ideas line up with common sense, and people nearly immediately recognize it as such. But every once in a while, I come up with an idea that is equally commonsensical, but it is so antithetical to current post-modern trends in culture, thought and philosophy, people ignore its common sense reality, and deign to mock and oppose the idea every time they get a chance. For instance, when people tell me about the ‘Homeless’ problem in Atlanta, I tell them that Atlanta doesn’t have a homeless problem, it has a family problem, as historically, it was the family that was responsible for housing and caring for its members, not the government or benevolent organizations and institutions. For those of us raised Post-Depression and Post-War on Poverty, we have become entirely comfortable with the idea that housing and care were neither the nuclear and extended family’s responsibility, nor individual family members responsibility, but were and should be entirely entrusted to the government, religious or benevolent organizations, and pay-to-play therapists. Even in the face of statistics and data that show preserving the outlines of the natural family in a child’s life, is nearly at all times better than the government, in post-modern liberalism, the idea of government responsibility seems more natural and effective than family responsibility. So comfortable are we of Negritude with this idea that when I tell people my solution to homelessness…Go Get Your Relatives! People recoil in fear, disgust, and terror. They are on drugs, they are crazy, they are beyond fixing, and the only people that can ‘take them’ is the criminal justice system and the government. So used to this idea are we of Negritude, that we are not ashamed at all of our children’s ‘takeovers’ and other bad behavior because hey, it is not our responsibility as Negro families and communities, it is the government’s. And as it is the government’s responsibility, why should I as an individual or as a family feel shame because our children are running around like wild heathen, screaming FIGHT like wild banshees! But of course my approach is correct, and the government should conceive and perceive itself as a ‘safety net’, not a ‘habitable state’.

Similarly run my opinions on food insecurity. America doesn’t have a ‘food insecurity problem’, it has a ‘family problem’! For that matter, how can a nation have a ‘food insecurity’ problem and an obesity problem at the same time! That is the first common sense thing. Plus, every morning I go walking or jogging before sunrise (lol mostly walking). Nearly inevitably I see deer walking, running, and frolicking quite casually. No disrespect to dear intended, but inasmuch as we humans have eliminated nearly all or most of their natural predators in the American context, the only pressures on their population are old age, sickness, and getting hit by cars. They don’t have a ‘food insecurity’ problem either, for the same exact reason we human Americans don’t. There is so much ‘human food residuals’ laying around, the old struggles and means to secure food, as well as the old instincts get drained as deer, bears, racoons, possums, etc., learn that just hanging around humans, and the amount of waste humans generate can oft times ensure a consistent food supply to many birds, bears, and other animals that now rely on human food waste to survive. Similarly, there is enough human food waste that there should not be a ‘food insecurity’ problem in human America. Why is there ‘food insecurity’. Weak families, make weak communities, make weak polities, and we have engendered a situation where the only reason there is ‘food instability’ and ‘food insecurity’ is because we live in an America filled with family instability, in African American families to the tune of 70% out of wedlock births. So the first signs of community instability, which is derived from family instability, is food and housing instability.

I mention the thing about the deer population because when I lived in rural South Carolina, nearly every Negro household had a few pounds of deer meat in the freezer. Whether they hunted or not, they knew someone that did, and thus they would share the fruit of the hunt. I remember deer/venison sausage, chops, steak, and other cuts of the meat would be routinely put on the grill, especially if money was tight or other more desired foodstuffs were in short supply. In addition, nearly everything we caught fishing, we ate, even common turtles. As casually as liberals go around throwing phrase ‘food instability’ around, you would think they would be the first to rectify it by any means necessary. But this is not the case. For in truth, they don’t throw the phrase ‘food insecurity’ around because they care about the homeless or other weakened populations. Nor do they make any attempt to reconcile how in the hell a nation riddled with ‘food insecurity’ is riddled even more by obesity! They use the phrase as a weapon against the traditional family and capitalism. I.e. the family, capitalism and government have failed us, because Republicans, the rich, the patriarchy, and others of nefarious intent have ‘weakened’ the government, its power and its authority to ‘take care of everybody’. Ergo liberals must empower the state to ‘take care of everybody’, and urge people to expect the state to ‘take care of everybody’. This is liberal insanity.
